How to put a PDF planner or notebook on your viwoods

On a viwoods AiPaper or AiPaper Mini, a PDF planner works best inside the Paper notes app, imported as a PDF template. Since firmware 3.14 the notes keep the links of a multi-page PDF working under your handwriting, according to ewritable's review of that update.

1. Pick the right file

ModelScreenEdition
AiPaper10.65" · 1920×2560 · 3:4Large 3:4
AiPaper Mini8.2" · 1440×1920 · 3:4Compact 3:4

No pen, so these can open the files but not write on them: AiPaper Reader · AiPaper Reader C.

The AiPaper has a 10.65 inch 3:4 screen and takes the Large layout. The AiPaper Mini, at 8.2 inches, takes Compact, with bigger text and wider rows. Both screens are 3:4, so the page fills the screen.

Then choose the edition and the hand:

In the file nameMeans
_us_Weeks start on Sunday · 12-hour schedule, 9 am · dates like March 15, 2027 · US week numbers
_intl_Weeks start on Monday · 24-hour schedule, 09:00 · dates like 15 March 2027 · ISO week numbers
_intl12_Weeks start on Monday · 12-hour schedule, 9 am · dates like 15 March 2027 · ISO week numbers
_rightRight-handed: tabs on the right edge, nothing to tap on the left side
_leftLeft-handed: everything mirrored, tabs on the left edge

These editions are for the planner. Notebook files are named by paper and hand instead, for example dot_right or meeting_left.

2. Copy it to your tablet

  1. Download the file and unzip it if it came in a zip file.
  2. Copy the PDF to the tablet with a USB-C cable, or save it to a cloud drive. ewritable lists Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive among the cloud drives the AiPaper works with.
  3. Check the firmware version in the settings and update if it is older than 3.14.

Both tablets run Android 13. Good e-Reader reports that Google Play came to the AiPaper and the AiPaper Mini with firmware 3.1.7, once Google services are switched on, so any cloud app from Google Play can bring the file in too.

3. Open it and follow the links

Recommended: a notebook from a PDF template

  1. Open the Paper notes app and create a new notebook.
  2. Choose to base it on a PDF template, and pick the planner.
  3. Open the notebook. The pages are the planner pages, with their links kept.
  4. Tap a link to jump. If a pen tap draws instead of jumping, tap the link with a finger.

ewritable describes this option as made for multi-page PDFs such as planners, forms and worksheets: you write directly on top of them while the embedded hyperlinks are preserved.

Alternative: the reading app

The Learning and reading app also opens PDFs and lets you annotate them with the pen. Following links there is not documented, so keep the planner in the Paper app. If neither suits you, Xodo from Google Play is a fallback:

  1. Install Xodo PDF Reader & Editor from Google Play.
  2. Open Xodo, tap the + button, choose Open file and pick the planner.
  3. To follow a link, stay in View mode, the hand icon, and tap the link.
  4. To write, open the menu at the top left, choose Annotate and pick the pen.
  5. Xodo saves your changes into the PDF itself, automatically in most cases, according to its own guide.

4. Write on the pages

  1. Write with the viwoods pen on any page of the notebook.
  2. Erase with the eraser at the top of the pen, or hold the button on its shaft for eraser mode.
  3. The pen is Wacom EMR, so ewritable notes that other Wacom-compatible pens also work.

Keep the original PDF on your computer as a clean backup. To start over, or to begin a fresh notebook, copy it again under a new name.

5. If something looks wrong

A link does nothing, or my pen draws on the button.
On almost every e-ink tablet the pen writes and the finger navigates. Tap the link with a finger.
The links do not work in my notebook.
Check that the firmware is 3.14 or later, then create the notebook again from the PDF template. A planner page used as a plain picture has no links.
There are white bars around the page, or the page looks small.
Use Large 3:4 on the AiPaper and Compact 3:4 on the AiPaper Mini.
Can I write on the AiPaper Reader?
No. The AiPaper Reader and AiPaper Reader C have no pen, so they can open the files but not write on them.
The tabs are under my hand, or under the toolbar.
Switch between the _right and _left versions. The side opposite the tabs never has anything to tap.
I'd like Monday, or Sunday, as the first day of the week.
Use another planner edition: _intl_ and _intl12_ start on Monday, with a 24- or 12-hour clock; _us_ starts on Sunday.

6. How sure we are

Every model gets one of these labels, based on what owners, the maker and established reviewers have published. Nothing here is a guess dressed up as a test.

  • Documented by the makerAiPaper · AiPaper MiniThe maker documents pen writing on PDFs, and following internal PDF links is documented by the maker or by established reviewers or planner sellers for this model or its software.
