viwoods AiPaper planner: how to import a PDF planner with working links

The viwoods AiPaper is a slim Android e-ink notebook with a pen, and since firmware 3.14 its Paper notes app can take a whole multi-page PDF as a template while keeping the links inside it. That means a hyperlinked planner can live in the notes app itself, not in a separate reader. This article covers the AiPaper and the AiPaper Mini: which file fits, how to import it, what to expect from the links and what to do when they don't respond.

Two tablets with a pen, two layouts

Your viwoodsScreenLayout to use
AiPaper10.65", 1920 × 2560, 3:4Large 3:4
AiPaper Mini8.2", 1440 × 1920, 3:4Compact 3:4
AiPaper Reader, AiPaper Reader C6.13", no penNot supported

Both pen models have 3:4 portrait screens, so a 3:4 page fills them with no bars. The Large page is drawn for a 10.3 inch screen, and on the 10.65 inch AiPaper it is shown about 3 percent bigger. On the 8.2 inch Mini a Large page would shrink to about 80 percent, so the Compact layout, drawn for smaller screens with bigger text and wider rows, is the better fit there.

Before you import: firmware 3.14

The feature that matters for a planner arrived in firmware 3.14. ewritable's review of viwoods firmware 3.14 describes a PDF template option in the notes app made for multi-page PDFs such as planners, forms and worksheets: you write directly on top of the pages while the embedded hyperlinks are preserved. Open the settings, check the firmware version and update if it is older than 3.14.

Both tablets run Android 13. Good e-Reader reports that Google Play came to the AiPaper and the AiPaper Mini with firmware 3.1.7, once Google services are switched on.

Step 1: copy the PDF to the tablet

  1. Download the planner and unzip it. Keep one PDF: the layout for your model, in the edition and hand you want.
  2. Copy it to the tablet with a USB-C cable, or save it to a cloud drive. ewritable lists Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive among the cloud drives the AiPaper works with.

Step 2: create a notebook from the PDF template

  1. Open the Paper notes app and create a new notebook.
  2. Choose to base it on a PDF template, and pick the planner.
  3. Open the notebook. Its pages are the planner pages, with their links kept.

Step 3: write with the pen, tap with a finger

Write anywhere on a page with the viwoods pen. To follow a link, tap it. If a pen tap leaves a mark instead of jumping, tap the link with a finger: on almost every e-ink tablet the pen writes and the finger navigates.

Your handwriting sits on top of the page and never touches the links, so a month tab keeps working however much you write around it. In the Graphite planner every page is at most 2 taps from the Index, and the ‹ › arrows at the top move to the previous or next day, week or month.

Test the sample in three taps

Working links in a PDF template are documented by ewritable's review, but no AiPaper owner has reported back to us yet. The free sample settles it in two minutes.

  1. On the Index, tap Oct 2026. The month page should open.
  2. On the month, tap 15. The page for Thursday 15 October should open.
  3. On the day page, tap Index in the top bar. You should be back where you started.

Then write a line, close the notebook and open it again. The ink should still be there, and the links should still work.

If the links don't respond: the fallbacks

The Learning and reading app also opens PDFs, but following links there is not documented, so keep the planner in the Paper app. As a fallback, Xodo PDF Reader & Editor from Google Play follows links in View mode and writes in Annotate mode. The viwoods setup guide has the Xodo steps.

Troubleshooting

The links do not work in my notebook.
Check that the firmware is 3.14 or later, then create the notebook again from the PDF template. A planner page used as a plain picture has no links.
The text looks small on my AiPaper Mini.
Use the Compact 3:4 file rather than Large 3:4.
The tabs are under my hand.
Use the left-handed file: tabs on the left, and the right side has nothing to tap.

Frequently asked questions

Does a hyperlinked PDF planner work on the viwoods AiPaper?
Yes on firmware 3.14 or later, according to ewritable's review: create a notebook from the PDF as a template in the Paper app and the links stay active under your handwriting. Test the free sample first, because no owner has reported back to us yet.
Which planner file fits the AiPaper Mini?
Compact 3:4. Its 8.2 inch screen is 3:4, and the Compact layout has bigger text and wider rows than a shrunk Large page.
Can I use the planner on the AiPaper Reader?
You can open it, but not write on it. The AiPaper Reader and AiPaper Reader C have no pen.
