How to put a PDF planner or notebook on your Xiaomi and Moaan

Xiaomi's e-ink tablets with a pen, the Xiaomi Note and the Moaan W8, were sold mainly in China, run Android 11 without Google Play and open PDFs in their own reader. Their exact screen shape is not confirmed and link-following is not documented, so the free sample comes first.

1. Pick the right file

The Xiaomi Note has a 10.3 inch screen and the Moaan W8 a 10 inch one. Neither resolution is confirmed, so the Large layout is a best guess for both. If the sample shows bars, the screen is not 3:4, and the page will still work, just a little smaller.

Most Xiaomi and Moaan InkPalm models are pocket readers without a pen, which can open the files but not write on them.

Then choose the edition and the hand:

These editions are for the planner. Notebook files are named by paper and hand instead, for example dot_right or meeting_left.

2. Copy it to your tablet

1. Download the file and unzip it if it came in a zip file.
2. Connect the tablet to your computer with a USB-C cable.
3. Copy the PDF to the tablet and open it from the reader.

The Moaan W8 interface was not entirely in English when Good e-Reader reviewed it, so menu names on your tablet may differ.

3. Open it and follow the links

1. Open the planner in the built-in reader.
2. Tap a link with a finger and see whether the page changes.
3. If links do not respond, the planner still works page by page, only more slowly. Decide with the sample before you buy.

Liliputing reports native support for EPUB, PDF and text files on the Xiaomi Note. Good e-Reader found that PDFs did not look as good on the W8 and that its Normal Refresh mode gives the best contrast for them, at the cost of slower page turns.

4. Write on the pages

Both tablets have a pen with 4096 levels of pressure. Good e-Reader counted eight pen types and an eraser on the W8. Write on the planner pages in the reader, then close the file and open it again to check that the ink was saved.

What to check in the free sample

1. The page fills the screen with at most thin bars, and the smallest text is easy to read.
2. A tap on a link, such as a date or a button in the top bar, jumps to its page.
3. The pen writes on the page, and the ink is still there after you close the file and open it again.

If all three work, the full planner will behave the same way, because it is built from the same pages.

Keep the original PDF on your computer as a clean backup. To start over, or to begin a fresh notebook, copy it again under a new name.

5. If something looks wrong

A link does nothing.

Tap with a finger instead of the pen. If links still do not respond, the reader does not follow them on your software version.

The page looks grey or faint.

On the Moaan W8, switch to Normal Refresh mode for PDFs, as Good e-Reader suggests.

There are bars around the page.

The screen shape of these models is not confirmed. Bars only mean the screen is not exactly 3:4, and the links still work where they should.

The tabs are under my hand, or under the toolbar.

Switch between the _right and _left versions. The side opposite the tabs never has anything to tap.

I'd like Monday, or Sunday, as the first day of the week.

Use another planner edition: _intl_ and _intl12_ start on Monday, with a 24- or 12-hour clock; _us_ starts on Sunday.

6. How sure we are

Every model gets one of these labels, based on what owners, the maker and established reviewers have published. Nothing here is a guess dressed up as a test.
