Which e-ink tablet for a PDF planner?

Seven pen tablets that people use for PDF planners, side by side: the screen, its shape, the planner file made for it, how a PDF gets onto it and whether its links work without extra steps.

Screen sizes are diagonals from each maker's product pages. Every planner page is portrait, and every edition comes right- and left-handed. On a narrow screen, scroll the table sideways.

Reading the table

What each column means

Screen and shape: Almost every pen tablet has a 3:4 screen, so one 3:4 page fits most of them. The Paper Pro Move is the exception, with a tall 9:16 screen. Size matters as well as shape: a page drawn for 10.3 inches still fits a 7.8 inch screen, but every line and button comes out about a quarter smaller, which is why the Nomad gets its own Compact layout.
Planner edition: The Graphite file drawn for that screen. Each tablet edition costs 9.90 € and holds only the files for that tablet, with a setup guide written for it. The Graphite Planner 2027 for every tablet, 16.90 €, has the Large 3:4, Compact 3:4 and Move 9:16 layouts in one download.
How to install a PDF: The route that keeps the planner a PDF document with working links. On the Kindle Scribe the route matters most: only Send to Kindle keeps the pages writable.
Links out of the box: Whether the links printed into the planner work without any extra app or setting. On all seven tablets the pen writes and a finger follows links.

What to weigh for planning

Screen size. A daily page with a schedule, tasks and notes is most comfortable on 10.3 inches or more. The 7.3 and 7.8 inch tablets are easier to carry and suit a weekly layout or short daily entries.
Getting files on. reMarkable uses its app or a USB web page; the Kindle Scribe needs Send to Kindle for a planner you can write in; Supernote and Boox take files by app or straight over USB.
Reading. The Kindle Scribe opens Kindle books, Boox runs Android apps, and reMarkable and Supernote read PDF and EPUB files with the focus on writing.
Light. The Supernote Manta and Nomad and the Boox Go 10.3 have no front light, so they need daylight or a lamp.

Whatever you choose, test a sample before buying a planner for it.
